Dr. Smith is a research associate and member of the graduate faculty in the Department
of Biology at the University of Central Florida. He earned a Ph.D. in Wildlife Ecology and Conservation (2003) and master’s degrees in Forest Resources and Conservation (1995) and Urban and Regional Planning (1989) from the University of Florida. He has over 25 years of experience in the fields of ecology and environmental planning. His primary focus is studying movement patterns and habitat use of terrestrial vertebrates and integrating conservation, transportation and land-use planning. Previous work, both as an academic and ecological consultant has included: landscape fragmentation/connectivity assessments; wildlife movement, behavioral and habitat use studies; wildlife-vehicle collision-reduction studies; highway hotspot modeling and ecopassage siting projects; and evaluation and design of wildlife-crossing structures. Besides serving as chair of the TRB Subcommittee on Ecology and Transportation (ADC-30), he is also a member of the USFWS Florida Panther Recovery Program’s Sub-team on Transportation Issues. He is active in many professional organizations and a perennial participant of ICOET (International Conference on Ecology and Transportation) and IENE (Infra Eco Network Europe) biennial meetings, and has served on state and regional working groups on transportation and habitat connectivity.
